“I Can Do It”: Teaching Kids Perseverance and a Growth Mindset

Every parent has seen it. A moment when something feels hard and a child says, “I can’t do this.”

At Infinity Martial Arts, we teach kids a different response. This week in class, our students are learning the first part of our Perseverance lesson: “I can do it.”

This simple phrase carries a powerful message. Belief comes before success.

What Perseverance Really Means

Perseverance is not about never struggling. It is about what kids tell themselves when they do.

A growth mindset helps children understand that skills are built over time. Mistakes are part of learning. Effort matters more than getting it right the first time.

When kids learn to say “I can do it,” they are learning to stay positive, keep trying, and trust that progress comes with practice.

How We Teach This in Class

In martial arts class, students are regularly challenged. New techniques, longer drills, and unfamiliar movements can feel uncomfortable at first.

Instead of avoiding challenges, students are encouraged to try anyway. Instructors reinforce effort, persistence, and improvement rather than perfection. Over time, kids begin to recognize that confidence grows through practice.

They learn that believing in themselves helps them stay engaged, even when something feels difficult.

How Parents Often See This at Home and School

Parents frequently tell us they notice changes such as kids being more willing to:

  • Try difficult homework without shutting down

  • Stick with tasks that take longer than expected

  • Approach new situations with more confidence

These moments show that perseverance is becoming a mindset, not just a lesson in class.

Why Growth Mindset Matters Long Term

Kids who believe they can improve are more resilient. They recover faster from mistakes and are more open to learning.

By teaching perseverance early, we help children build the emotional tools they need to face challenges with confidence throughout life.

Life Skill Challenge for Families

This week, we encourage families to listen for self-talk.

When your child faces something hard, ask, “What can you tell yourself right now?”

Practice replacing “I can’t” with “I can do it.” Celebrate effort and persistence, even when progress is slow.
