Many parents today share the same concern: “My child struggles to pay attention.” At Infinity Martial Arts, focus is not something we expect kids to magically have. It is a skill we intentionally teach, practice, and reinforce every week. This month, students are learning our second core Infinity Karate lesson: Focus. The first part of that lesson is simple and powerful: Focus your eyes. Why Focus Starts with the Eyes Where a child’s eyes go, their attention follows. When kids learn to control their eyes, they become better listeners, learners, and teammates. Focused eyes tell others, “I am paying attention and ready to learn.” This is especially important in a world full of screens, noise, and constant distractions. How We Teach Focus on the Mats In class, students practice focusing their eyes by: Watching the instructor during demonstrations Keeping eyes on their partner during drills Looking at their target before moving These habits help students process information more clearly and respond with confidence. We also use simple attention-based activities that help kids recognize when their focus drifts and how to bring it back. Over time, this builds awareness and self-control. How This Helps at School and at Home Parents often tell us they notice improvements like: Better listening when directions are given More eye contact during conversations Increased ability to stay engaged with tasks These changes come from practicing focus consistently in a structured environment. Why This Skill Matters Long Term Focus is a foundation skill. When children can control their attention, they are better prepared to learn new material, follow instructions, and stay safe during physical activity. By teaching kids to focus their eyes first, we set them up to succeed as we move into deeper focus skills involving the mind and body. Life Skill Challenge for Families This week, we encourage families to practice focused attention together. Ask your child: Look for moments at home or school where focused eyes make a difference, such as during homework, conversations, or instructions. Praise the effort when you see it. Want to Help Your Child Build Strong Focus Skills? At Infinity Martial Arts, focus is not a one-time lesson. It is woven into every class through consistent expectations, positive coaching, and structured practice. If you are looking for a program that helps kids improve attention, confidence, and self-discipline while staying active, we would love to welcome your family.
