Respect Starts Here: Why Self-Respect Is the First Lesson We Teach at Infinity Martial Arts

When parents think about martial arts, they often picture kicks, punches, and physical skills. At Infinity Martial Arts, those skills matter, but they are not where we start.

We start with Respect.

Every week in class, our students participate in short group discussions called Mat Chats. These lessons are designed to help kids understand important life skills and how to apply them both on and off the mats. Right now, we are beginning a new rotation focused on three core Infinity Karate lessons: Respect, Focus, and Perseverance.

The first lesson is simple, but powerful: Respect starts here.

What Does “Respect Starts Here” Mean?

Before children can learn to respect others, they need to learn how to respect themselves.

Self-respect shows up in everyday choices:

  • Trying your best, even when something is hard

  • Listening and following directions

  • Taking care of your body and your belongings

  • Doing the right thing, even when no one is watching

At Infinity Martial Arts, we help kids understand that self-respect is not about being perfect. It is about effort, responsibility, and pride in who they are becoming.

How We Teach This on the Mats

During class, students practice self-respect by:

  • Standing tall and listening during instruction

  • Giving effort in every drill

  • Staying focused and making safe choices

These moments may seem small, but repeated week after week, they build confidence and discipline. Kids begin to understand that their choices matter.

How Parents See This at Home and School

Parents often tell us they notice changes outside the dojo, too:

  • Kids take more responsibility for homework

  • They are quicker to clean up or follow directions

  • They show more confidence when facing challenges

That is the goal. Martial arts should support your child’s growth everywhere, not just during class.

Why This Matters So Early

Respect is the foundation for everything else we teach. Focus and perseverance are much easier to develop when a child believes in themselves and takes ownership of their choices.

By starting with self-respect, we help kids build the mindset they need to succeed in martial arts and in life.

Life Skill Challenge for Families

This week, we encourage families to practice self-respect together.

Ask your child:
“What is one way you can show self-respect today?”

It could be finishing homework without reminders, giving full effort in class, or taking care of their uniform or room. Celebrate the effort, not just the outcome.
