At Infinity Martial Arts, we believe that goals are more than dreams — they are plans in action. This week, we are teaching students how to take their goals to the next level by making them SMART: Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound. SMART goals give kids the clarity and structure they need to succeed in martial arts, at school, and in life. What Are SMART Goals? We explain to students that not all goals are created equal. Saying “I want to get better at karate” is a nice thought, but it is too vague to measure progress. By using the SMART system, goals become clear and achievable: ✅ Specific: Focused on one thing. For example: Why It Matters SMART goals teach kids how to break down big dreams into practical steps. This skill builds focus, discipline, and confidence. When students see progress they can measure, they stay motivated and less likely to give up when things get difficult. Research shows that children who set clear, realistic goals develop stronger problem-solving skills, higher self-confidence, and greater perseverance. At Infinity, SMART goals help students stay on track for promotions, but more importantly, they give them tools they can carry into school, sports, and everyday life. For parents, SMART goals provide a way to encourage responsibility and accountability. Instead of vague promises like “I’ll try harder,” kids learn to make specific commitments, like “I’ll read for 15 minutes every night” or “I’ll complete my homework before dinner.” How We Teach It in Class In class this week, we are walking students through the process of turning a simple goal into a SMART one. We start with something general, like “I want better kicks,” and guide them step by step: Specific: “Side kicks” Measurable: “20 kicks each day” Achievable: Yes, realistic for most students Relevant: Helps for testing, sparring, and self-defense Time-bound: “For one month” The final SMART goal becomes: “I will practice 20 side kicks every day for one month.” This exercise shows students how to think critically about their goals and gives them a formula they can use again and again. 🥋 Life Skill Challenge of the Week We are challenging students to take one of their own goals and turn it into a SMART goal. Parents, sit down with your child and talk through each step of the SMART system. Write the goal down together and post it somewhere visible, like on the fridge or in their room, so they can track their progress. At Infinity Martial Arts, we believe success comes from preparation and persistence. SMART goals give children the roadmap to turn effort into achievement. If you would like your child to learn how to set goals, stay motivated, and build confidence both on and off the mats, contact us today to sign up for a free introductory lesson.
✅ Measurable: You can track it.
✅ Achievable: Realistic for your level and time.
✅ Relevant: Important and connected to your bigger goals.
✅ Time-bound: Has a deadline.
Instead of “I want to get better at kicks,” a SMART goal would be: “I will practice 20 side kicks every day for one month.”
