Be a Buddy, Not a Bully

October is Bully Prevention Month, and all month long we are equipping students with the tools to build confidence, compassion, and leadership. This week, we are talking with our students about the different types of bullying and how they can take action to be a buddy instead of a bully.

The Four Kinds of Bullies

We explain to our students that bullying is when someone tries to hurt others on purpose, whether with words, actions, or by leaving them out. It can show up in four main ways:
Verbal: Name-calling, teasing, or saying mean things
Physical: Hitting, pushing, or taking belongings
Social: Leaving people out or spreading rumors
Online (Cyber): Hurtful comments or messages through technology

We want kids to recognize these behaviors so they can avoid participating in them, stand up when they see them, and seek help from trusted adults when needed.

Be a Buddy, Not a Bully

At Infinity, we teach that the opposite of being a bully is being a buddy. This means choosing actions that help, not hurt. We give students simple, practical examples they can use in their daily lives:

  • Invite someone to join a game.

  • Say something kind to cheer up a classmate.

  • Stand with a friend who looks left out.

  • Post something positive online.

Why It Matters

Understanding the different types of bullying gives children clarity and confidence. But just as important, learning how to be a buddy teaches empathy, leadership, and responsibility.

For parents, this lesson matters because it helps children see that small, positive choices have a big impact. A child who decides to include someone at recess or say something kind to a teammate is building habits that will shape their character for years to come.

This Week’s Focus: Taking Action as a Buddy

This week in class, we are encouraging every student to put this lesson into practice by taking one action to be a buddy. Parents, this is a great time to ask your child questions like:

  • Who did you include or encourage at school today?

  • How did you stand up for someone this week?

  • What’s one kind thing you can do tomorrow?

🥋 Life Skill Challenge of the Week

We are challenging students to take one action to be a buddy instead of a bully this week. Parents, you can help by encouraging your child to look for opportunities at school, at home, or in the dojo and by celebrating their efforts when they share their story.

At Infinity Martial Arts, our mission is to empower students to become leaders in life, not just on the mats. Bully prevention is not just about avoiding harm, it’s about actively creating a culture of respect, support, and kindness. Together with parents, we can raise kids who know how to stand tall, make good choices, and choose to be buddies every single day.
